New technology

This week I had an opportunity to take a look at the next evolution of IBM’s popular WebSphere application server packaged with some UML goodies in the form of Rational Software Architect. The neatest thing to me is the updates to WSAD (now called Rational Application Developer) that includes full support for Java Server Faces (JSF).

JSF is an application framework that provides the means to have drag and drop components for your applications… not just web applications, but all sorts of stuff. It takes the power of Java and the simplicity of ASP.NET and mixes it all up. Hopefully I’ll get to leverage the potential of JSF… Unfortunately RSA/RAD is too expensive for me (a couple grand for a single license + a year of support). It’s built upon the open source Eclipse 3.0 project, but there isn’t a nifty GUI for drag and drop yet that is free. The MyEclipse project has some support for JSF, but nothing visual yet.

Lost everyone so far? Good.

Now that all the non-devout followers of all things slagglific are gone (hey–a new word!) let’s get down to business.

Tomorrow Lori and I are running in the annual Race for the Cure, for the Komen Foundation. We’re doing the 5K run and if I’m not dead afterward, I’ll be doing some yardwork to boot. So much for a relaxing weekend, hehe. Well, it’s for a good cause (both the race and the yardwork) so I can’t complain too much.

Keep me in your thoughts and prayers. I’m listening to Abba’s “Dancing Queen” on iTunes. Loudly. With gusto.

I think just for kicks I’ll follow it up with AC/DC’s “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”. For a little variety. But first, let me leave you with a nugget of goodness from the late Mitch Hedberg: “I wanna see a forklift lift a crate of forks. It would be SO DAMN LITERAL!”
