The beginning of a new Tim

This weekend I spent a lot of time programming in Java, working on a cool program to view a webcam on my cellphone. I’ll post more about that later on dev dot slaggle. I got a lot of computer time in because Lori had to work a lot. She had the pager this weekend, and had to work some pretty major issues. On Sunday she got two hours of sleep and was working for about 13 hours. I feel bad that she had to work so long.

Sunday afternoon we decided to train the dogs a bit. I’ve been working with them in the backyard trying to get them to follow me and heel on command, and that has been going fairly well. So I decided it was time to take them out on their leashes and see how they performed in the park next to our house. Apparently their collars weren’t tight enough because we ended up playing chase more than walking. After our little excursion outside I felt pretty beat and I realized just how much I’ve been slacking off on my exercise.

After getting the dogs back inside I literally collapsed on the floor and had to fight to catch my breath. I haven’t had to gasp for air like that since I was little and was on several different inhalers and a breathing machine for bad spells. So I need to get into shape, end of story. It’s for my own good. If I’m not careful I’ll end up with diabetes or I could seriously screw up my heart.

The good news is that I’ve already cut down my caffeine consumption to the point that I’m not dependent on it, and I don’t eat a lot of sugary foods. That’s thanks to the warning from my eye doctor. But I *have* slacked off on my exercise and that’s what’s doing me in. I need to step it back up and start going to the gym every other day like I was doing and watch my diet even closer. Eating fast food and fried items isn’t exactly the best way to shed the pounds.

I think I’ll try to post some of my progress here for posterity. Last night I exercised for 30 minutes on my gazelle while listening to some music. I think tonight I’d like to try going on the elliptical at the gym and burn some serious calories.
